Christians & Anarchists?

It is essential that a thinking person be able to understand not only what they believe, but why it is so. As parents a gift we can give our children is leading them to the truth through the logical exploration of ideas.

In our home we teach that all coercive government in existence has been a violation of God’s moral law. Also, we are Christians who acknowledge the sovereignty of the Almighty King. These ideas are not contradictory, Not only do they complement each other, I would submit that one is dependent upon the other.

Over the next 5-8 weeks I hope to explore this issue and write about it here. These blogs will be short in length, so not every question will be answered. In fact the aspiration is to leave you asking yourself more questions than when you began. Learning comes through thoughtful, deliberate, reasoned inquiry.

I anticipate covering the following four topics (although they might be amended):

1) The non-aggression axiom, The 10 Commandments, and Christ.

2) Natural Law and the Christian

3) Does coercive government (a.k.a, “The State”) go against the teachings of Christ?

4) Should a Christian play an active role in coercive government which is comprised of people inside and outside the covenant of grace? What are some of the moral implications of doing so?

As a note, I want to acknowledge that many other minds have pondered these questions. In no way do I think I’m the first, nor do I believe I will be the last. Indeed, I am optimistic about meeting others who are trudging through these ideas as well so that we may exchange encouragement through the Word.

Finally, even though my name appears on this series, I could not develop it without working with my husband, James. I want him to receive proper credit for learning alongside of me, guiding me to new sources of information, and being the first to introduce me to the idea of Christian anarchy. With anticipation, I await his post on how our family defines that term.

Blessings in Him,
Tammie

About me

We are a group of Christians dedicated to the gospel of Jesus Christ as set out by Jesus, the Apostles, the early church and then defended by Augustine, many medieval Christians, Luther, Calvin, Edwards and the Puritans, some of the Fundamentalists, and many modern Reformed and Evangelical people. The odd part? We are also convinced, both from political theory and from the Bible, that Anarchy is that which will bring a semblance of order to earthly society. We do not believe that the state works or that it is Biblical and, as such, we tout freedom from state. We have but one king and that is Christ.
